Northern New England’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center

Nurse with GirlDartmouth Cancer Center offers a full range of cancer care at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. We work closely with doctors, nurses and specialists at regional centers in Keene, Manchester, and Nashua, NH, and in St. Johnsbury, VT, as well as at affiliated hospitals in northern New England to coordinate patient referral, treatment, and education as close to home as possible.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has renewed its Cancer Center Support Grant to Dartmouth and Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Dartmouth Cancer Center (NCCC). The five-year, $15.5 million grant will provide continued support for NCCC’s clinical care and research missions. The cancer center is one of only 51 centers in the United States—and the only one located outside a major urban area—to have this prestigious designation. NCI recognized the cancer center for its leadership and resources, in addition to demonstrating an added depth and breadth of research and substantial transdisciplinary research that bridges basic science and clinical research.

Caring for someone who has been diagnosed with a serious illness can be stressful. Caregivers can often feel isolated and lack resources for support, especially in rural areas like New England. Funded by a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, a diverse co-design team is using person-centered design principles to create a peer-to-peer community network for serious illness caregivers in our region. The network is designed to help caregivers be more prepared to cope with the surprises that arise during the illness and in bereavement. Both an online component as well as options to connect caregivers in person are being explored.

What’s In A Cancer Center?

  • Board certified oncologists. Our providers are all fellowship trained. Many have additional training in their specific area of focus.
  • The best technology. From operating rooms with built in MRI and CT to a linear accelerator which pauses treatment if you move out of proper alignment and the latest in robotic surgery, we have the most advanced technology to offer our patients.
  • Access to clinical trials. More than 250 research projects and 150 clinical trials are active at NCCC. Those clinical trials include how exercise and diet help pre- and post-treatment, collaborations to develop a better understanding of cancer recurrence, and pharmaceutical trials for new drugs or new surgical techniques, just to name a few.
  • Multidisciplinary care plans. Our oncologists, surgeons, pathologists and radiologist meet weekly to discuss new patients and establish care plans that are based on the needs of each individual patient.

Our Ultimate Goal

Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every patient:

  • Sees the right medical staff in the right order
  • Gets the necessary tests with timely and accurate results
  • Understands the diagnosis and the best treatment options
  • Has complete support throughout the process
