Emergency Department

The Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Emergency Department cares for approximately 32,000 patients annually and has 35 beds and a 7-bed Psych Emergency Unit. The entire ED is staffed by RNs, LPNs, Paramedics, EMTs, and LNAs.  We are the only Level-1 Trauma Center in the state of NH and work closely with our system affiliates to accept patients requiring critical, neurological, cardiac, obstetrical, medical, or trauma care. Our unit sees a large volume of referrals, transfers, and trauma consults from outside facilities, and provides services for the local community.

Our nurses are trained for trauma care with the ENA-sponsored Trauma Nursing Care Curriculum for adults and pediatric patients. Our unit provides care to patients throughout the lifespan including neonates through geriatric populations in various states of health, often with multiple disease processes. The Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Emergency Department also recently received a Level 1 Geriatric Accreditation certifying our high standard of excellence provided to our elderly population.  Our nurses are trained for resuscitation (Trauma, STEMI, STROKE, SEPSIS, Cardiac/Respiratory Arrests, Obstetrics), procedural sedation, critical care, acute care, outpatient care, trauma care, mental health, and adult/pediatric illnesses/injuries.  Emergency medicine provides a safety net to the nation’s public health deficits and requires staff willing to work in a constantly changing environment.
