Medical Specialties
At Dartmouth we take great pride in caring for our Medical Surgical patients knowing that we have the sickest of the sick patients in the region and that we are NOT your typical Med Surg. Our 63 bed Medicine unit is comprised of 3 smaller units located on Levels 1, 2 & 3. As an RN on any of these units you will receive support from a phenomenal leadership team as well as fellow RN’s, LPNs (L1WC) and LNAs.

Medical Specialties – Level 1 Wing C (L1WC)
Is a 37-bed, Inpatient Medicine unit. We care for adults typically on the Inpatient Medicine service who suffer from acute and/or chronic illness. Some of the things included in that population are; liver failure, kidney failure requiring dialysis, sepsis/bacteremia, cystic fibrosis, etc. We have a team dedicated to process improvement, problem solving, and teambuilding, which has allowed us to become a unit where everyone is a part of the solution. As a staff member on L1WC, you will have the opportunity to take part in unit-based initiatives, gain insight into caring for the entire person while providing a holistic approach, while truly be a part of a unit culture that supports learning for all.
Medical Specialties Level 2 Wing C/ Level 3 Wing C (L2WC/L3WC)
Medical Specialties is an Inpatient Medicine unit that cares for often-complex medical patients. The unit has 26 private beds with 16 on L2WC and 10 on L3WC. Our patient population is varied and challenging, we care for adults typically on the Inpatient Medicine service who suffer from acute and/or chronic illness. L2WC has also been the designated unit for COVID patient needing treatment on a Med Surg level of care. Although our patient population is very dynamic and challenging, our team approach and changing environment make it a great place to learn and build/expand on nursing assessment, delegation, prioritization, critical thinking, and time management skills.
Medical Specialty Care Unit Level 3 Wing A (L3WA)
is a brand new, state-of-the-art 16-bed progressive care unit in our new Patient Pavilion. L3WA will care primarily for medically complex patients on the hospital medicine service. As a building block in terms of patient acuity, as well as professional development, to our 63-bed Medicine unit, we are poised to provide a dynamic learning and team-based environment for both new and experienced care providers. Inpatient medicine cares for patients of all ages and diagnoses with complex patient needs and high acuity as our specialty.
Whether you want to support patients with chronic illness, acute illness, surgical consultation, or infectious disease, you will be helping them all on L3WA. The team is built with an established leadership team ready to support the growth and expansion of this service line, giving those who join our team the ability to shape the unit culture. Come share in the excitement of opening a new unit, working with the best multidisciplinary team around, while also being able to care for a myriad of patients, and never finding yourself bored.

The Intermediate Special Care Unit (ISCU) is an 8-bed progressive care unit that cares for both medical and surgical patients. As the only area in the hospital that takes care of both medical and surgical patients as their specialty, the ISCU provides a unique opportunity to delve into both patient populations. In addition, we are the only unit that takes solid organ kidney transplants post op day 0, which provides for an incredible learning opportunity for a student. In addition, the small care area allows staff to build relationships with all members of the interdisciplinary team. As a unit dedicated to practice improvement, working through challenging and complex situations, and providing at the elbow education when necessary, a student who will be successful here is one that can adapt quickly, resource when necessary, and is wanting of a diverse patient population.
