The Center for Surgical Innovation

center for surgical innovation

The Center for Surgical Innovation was built as a joint endeavor by Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, the National Institutes of Health, Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine, and Thayer School of Engineering. The Center for Surgical Innovation (CSI) offers a unique clinical environment that offers two fully integrated operating rooms with surgical navigation, a procedural suite, 3T Intraoperative MRI, and a 64 slice Intraoperative CT. The facility combines clinical and research environments allowing for the full spectrum of bench-to-bedside investigations aimed at improving the efficacy and safety of surgery. The CSI as a research facility has three distinctions: a controlled surgical environment with integrated multi-modal 3D imaging, operational engineering for safe co-location of research and clinical care, and the ability to progress though research to clinical applications in the same environment, with the same equipment.

  • A $20-million, 12,000-square-foot facility, adjacent to the Advanced Imaging Center on the DHMC campus.
  • Two fully equipped operating rooms with intraoperative MRI and CT, a procedure room and a diagnostic scanning room.

  • Intra-op MRI and CT are key features for improving surgical procedures and validating new technologies.
  • State-of-the-art ventilation capabilities designed specifically for a combined research and patient care facility.
  • No other center has MRI and CT imaging capability in the same OR location.
