Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is a 22-bed unit where nearly all patients who have received general anesthesia come to recover after their surgery or procedure if the patient is booked to stay for at least one night in the hospital.

After a patient is recovered he/she is transferred to either an inpatient medical surgical or intermediate level of care bed.  Intubated patients who come to the PACU are typically extubated within 4 hours, and if not for various reasons, the patient is transferred to a higher level of care typically to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).  We care for patients who have had many types of surgeries with the top surgical services being Ortho, Vascular, General, and Thoracic.

The nurse to patient ratio is 2:1 at all times, and we are a close-knit unit that rises to the daily challenges of acuity and patient flow.
